simdrive Tokyo (シムドライブ)
Overview
simdrive is a members only driving lab on the eighth floor of an office building in Higashiazabu, Minato City, Tokyo. It was founded by Tomonobu Fujii, a working professional racing driver whose career runs from SUPER GT to the WEC, the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the Daytona 24 Hours. The operator bills it as the first members only driving lab in Japan.
The lab is built for people who race real cars, mostly gentleman drivers getting ready for a race weekend. Each member gets a simulation model of their own car, called a MOD, plus a lap recorded by a pro driver in that car on their chosen circuit to measure themselves against. The operator says its members have won more than 350 trophies in three years.
The simulation technology comes from British and Japanese engineers working together, and there is a second simdrive in Dubai Hills, UAE. The Tokyo space is split into a sim room, a lounge, a telemetry room where engineers watch live data, and a viewing space.
What to Expect
- Three permanent simulators, each on a motion system with eight motion sensors, facing a 5 m curved LED screen that shows the circuit at life size (1:1 scale).
- The car is a simulation model built to match a real one. Trial drivers choose from several cars, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup among them, and members drive a model of their own car that is developed through hours of test driving.
- Circuits cover the major Japanese tracks and well known circuits overseas, and each member has a pro driver's master lap recorded for their car and circuit.
- Live telemetry runs on a British system, so every lap can be laid over the pro's lap and the time lost shows corner by corner.
- With engineer support booked, an engineer watches the live data from the telemetry room and gives driving feedback over the radio during the session.
- Pro driver coaching runs over two hours of track time.
- The lounge and viewing space sit apart from the sim room, for a companion who comes along to watch.
