Technik-Museum Pütnitz

The Technik-Museum Putnitz occupies the hangars of a former Soviet seaplane airfield on the Putnitz peninsula, and it preserves the world that built the place: around 750 exhibits of Eastern Bloc technology, kept by volunteers and, wherever possible, kept running.

Three halls carry the story. The first holds military wheeled vehicles, the second the civilian machines of everyday Eastern Bloc life, and the third the heavy metal: tracked military vehicles, aircraft and ship exhibits, joined outside by railway equipment and the restored patrol boat Stralsund. What separates Putnitz from every static collection is the driving program: you can take a Ural 375D around the terrain course or a Lada Niva off road yourself, ride the bendy Ikarus bus, or hold on in the eight-wheel ZIL-135.

It sits on the Baltic coast between Rostock and the Darss peninsula, an easy detour from the beach towns, and the same airfield hosts Germany's famous Ostblock vehicle meets.

A big, honest, hands-on site: hangars indoors, machinery outdoors, and engines that still start. Allow half a day.

Look out for:

• The driving experiences: self-drive a Ural 375D on the terrain course or a Lada Niva off road (17+), ride the Ikarus articulated bus, or take the €45 ZIL-135 eight-wheeler ride. About 15 minutes each; tracked vehicle experiences need booking two weeks ahead.

• Hall 2's civilian time capsule, the cars, bikes and household technology of daily life behind the Iron Curtain.

• Hall 3's heavy metal: tracked military vehicles, aircraft and ship exhibits under one roof.

• The patrol boat Stralsund, restored, plus railway machinery on the grounds.

• The airfield itself, a genuine Cold War Soviet seaplane base, hangars and all.

• Event days, when the site hosts vehicle meets and demonstrations; brilliant to catch, busy to park at.

Wear proper shoes, bring weather cover, and check the events calendar: the airfield occasionally closes the museum for major meets.

• Tickets: €9 adult (17+), €4 child (7 to 16), under 7 free.

• Seasonal hours, always 10:00 to 16:00: Easter weekend, spring weekends, Wednesday to Sunday in May, daily through July and August, tapering back through September and October. Closed in winter, and occasionally for airfield events, so check the site before travelling.

• Driving experiences: minimum age 17 to self-drive, rides roughly 15 minutes, ZIL-135 passenger ride €45; tracked vehicles must be booked two weeks in advance by phone or email.

• Getting there: on the Putnitz peninsula outside Ribnitz-Damgarten, drive-to with free parking; the Baltic beach towns of the Darss are minutes away.

• It is a big outdoor site: weather-appropriate shoes and clothing matter, and some outdoor areas have limited accessibility, so contact the museum for specific needs.
