Spain is MotoGP's heartland. It hosts more rounds than any other country — four to five per season across four circuits: Jerez (the Spanish GP, traditionally May, with the most passionate crowds in the championship), Aragon (Motorland), Catalunya, and Valencia (Ricardo Tormo, traditionally the season finale). Marc Márquez, Jorge Lorenzo, Joan Mir, Álex Rins — the modern era of MotoGP has been Spanish-dominated, and the home crowds reflect that. Jerez during the Spanish GP weekend is one of the best atmospheres in international motorsport.
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló, 20km north of Barcelona, is the home of the Spanish F1 Grand Prix and one of the most-driven circuits in motorsport. Every F1 team tests here before the season — the layout's combination of high and low-speed corners, a long main straight, and the technical final sector make it the industry's reference circuit. Beyond F1, it hosts the Catalan MotoGP, regional GT championships, and an active track day calendar. The Circuit Experience program lets visitors drive their own car or a hire on the same tarmac the F1 teams use.
Rally Catalunya has been on the WRC calendar since 1991 — famously the only mixed-surface rally on the championship, with gravel stages on Saturday and tarmac on Sunday, requiring two complete setup changes mid-event. Based around Salou on the Costa Daurada, the rally runs through the inland hills of Tarragona province in October. Spain also has a deep domestic rally scene: the national championship runs 8+ rounds annually, and Spanish drivers consistently feature at WRC2 level. The mixed-surface format makes Catalunya one of the most technically demanding events on the calendar.
The Spanish Pyrenees deliver some of Europe's most underrated mountain driving. The N-260 (Eje Pirenaico) is a 700km east-west route running the length of the Spanish Pyrenees from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, threading through the Aigüestortes, Ordésa, and Aiguilles d'Anza national parks. The Port de la Bonaigua (2,072m) and the climbs into Andorra deliver proper Alpine-character driving on a Spanish budget. Quieter than the French side, with better food, cheaper fuel, and roads that have been substantially rebuilt over the last decade. June through September for the high passes.
The drive from Málaga to Ronda via the A-397 climbs through Sierra de las Nieves with switchback after switchback into the white village country of Andalusia. Ronda itself sits on a 100m gorge spanned by the Puente Nuevo, an 18th-century stone bridge that Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway both wrote about. The network of secondary roads connecting Ronda, Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra, Setenil de las Bodegas, and the other Pueblos Blancos delivers some of the most photogenic driving in southern Europe. Best from October through May; summer heat makes the open mountain roads punishing.
Southern Spain is one of Europe's only year-round motorcycle touring destinations. Andalusia, Murcia, and the Costa Blanca deliver rideable weather from October through April when most of Europe is winterised. Multiple specialist operators run guided motorcycle tours covering the Sierra Nevada, the Andalusian white villages, and the coastal corridors out of Málaga, Marbella, and Alicante. Bike rentals (BMW GS, Triumph, Ducati Multistrada) available by the day or week. The classic Spanish winter motorcycle trip: 7-10 days of mountain and coastal riding when riders from Northern Europe can't even get the bike out of the garage.
