Iceland's defining road trip. Route 1 (the Hringvegur) is the 1,332km paved loop that circumnavigates the entire country — the only road that connects Iceland's coastal communities into a continuous drive. The Ring Road covers nearly every postcard Iceland landscape: the south coast waterfalls (Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss), Vatnajökull glacier, the eastern fjords, Lake Mývatn's geothermal area, and the western peninsulas. Doable in 7-10 days, ideally 14 with proper stops. Best driven June-September (24-hour daylight in June); winter brings serious snow, ice, and frequent road closures. F-roads (Fjallvegir, mountain roads) are Iceland's interior off-road network — unpaved, often involving glacial river crossings, opened only late June through early September. Legally restricted to 4x4 vehicles (and your rental insurance will void if you take a 2WD car on them). The classic F-road objectives: Landmannalaugar (F208 from the south, the rhyolite mountains of the Highlands), Þórsmörk (the F249, multiple unbridged river crossings, technically demanding), Askja in the interior, and the Kjölur (F35) and Sprengisandur (F26) Highland traverses. Real adventure driving — read the water before crossing, check the færdín (road conditions) site, never drive solo.
Iceland's unique contribution to motorsport. Formula Offroad (Toræfrar in Icelandic) is the country's homegrown motorsport — purpose-built high-power buggies (often 1,000+ horsepower, paddle tyres, methanol or alcohol fuel) competing to climb impossibly steep volcanic slopes and water-skim across sand plains. The Icelandic Formula Offroad Championship runs through summer at Hella, Akureyri, Ísafjörður, and other venues. The genuinely unique image of trucks driving vertically up cliffs has made Icelandic Formula Offroad a viral motorsport video category for two decades. Spectator-friendly. Most rounds run June through September.
Iceland has the world's most distinctive modified 4x4 culture. The "super jeep" — typically a heavily modified Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol with 44-46" tyres, raised suspension, custom diff lockers, and tropical-spec drivetrain components — evolved here specifically for Highland driving and glacier access. Local specialist shops (Arctic Trucks, Isafold, and several others) have made Iceland the world's most respected super jeep modification ecosystem. The Arctic Trucks AT44 program developed the Antarctica-spec vehicles used by polar expeditions. Multiple operators run super jeep tours from Reykjavík into the Highlands and onto Langjökull glacier; for visitors who can't drive themselves, this is the way to experience Iceland's interior.
Iceland is on the bucket list of every serious adventure motorcyclist. The combination of the Ring Road, F-road network, glacier-fed rivers, volcanic terrain, and the kind of remoteness you can't find elsewhere in Europe makes it world-class. The 24-hour summer daylight (June) means riding all night through the Highlands. Self-rental for confident riders is available. Best riding season July-August; conditions outside this window get genuinely dangerous fast.
Snæfellsnes Peninsula on Iceland's west coast is often called "Iceland in miniature" — a 200km loop that compresses every Icelandic landscape (glaciers, lava fields, black beaches, fishing villages, the iconic Kirkjufell mountain) into a single day's driving. Westfjords (further northwest) takes the same idea further: the Strandir coast and the Hornstrandir reserve approaches deliver Iceland's most dramatic and least-touristed coastal driving. The 60-island Drangsnes and Djupavik routes feel like the end of the road. Westfjords ferry from Stykkishólmur makes a natural Snæfellsnes-Westfjords combination. Both regions accessible May through October; Westfjords roads close completely in winter.
