One of the WRC's classic legacy events, dating to 1953 and returning to the championship calendar in 2021 after a 7-year absence. The Acropolis is famous for being brutal — rough, dusty, rocky gravel through Greek mountain terrain in punishing summer heat. Stage names like Pavliani, Karoutes, Elatia, and Tarzan are part of rally folklore. The ceremonial start happens at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, with the service park at Lamia. Run in September. The rally is genuinely demanding for both cars and drivers — punctures, broken suspension, overheating, and dust-induced visibility issues are all part of the Acropolis legend.
Serres Racing Circuit in northern Greece (near the Bulgarian border) is the country's main permanent racing venue — a 2.5km layout opened in 1998, hosting national touring car championships, motorcycle racing, and an active track day calendar. Greece's circuit racing scene is small but real, with serious local rounds for the Greek Touring Car Championship and Greek motorcycle racing series. Most events run May through October when conditions favour the open layout. Beyond Serres, the karting scene at Megara (near Athens) is strong and produced several Greek racing drivers including Andreas Zuber.
The Peloponnese peninsula is Greece's classic road trip destination, compressing every landscape into one 600km region. Nafplio works as a natural base — the route from Athens via Corinth Canal is about 90 minutes on modern toll road. From Nafplio, day loops reach Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia, and Sparta. The Mani Peninsula in the south offers Greece's most dramatic road character: stone tower villages, arid limestone landscapes, twisty mountain roads above the Aegean. The classic 7-day Peloponnese loop covers ancient sites, mountain passes, and coastal driving without ever exceeding 3 hours between stops.
Crete's interior is one of the Mediterranean's most demanding driving environments. The White Mountains (Lefka Ori) rise to 2,453m and the road network climbs steeply from coastal Heraklion or Chania up to villages like Anogeia and through the mountain passes to the south coast at Sfakia. Hairpins, blind corners, goats on the road, fallen rocks, and locals who know every metre by heart. The Heraklion-Chania northern coastal highway is straightforward and scenic, but the real Crete driving experience is the inland mountain network. Best driven April through October; winter brings snow above 1,500m.
Two of Greece's most spectacular mainland approaches. The drive to Delphi from Athens climbs through the Parnassos massif on the E65 — modern highway giving way to the historic mountain road up to the ancient oracle site at 600m. Meteora, in central Greece, is reached via the E65 north to Trikala, then the climb through Kastraki to the rock formation monasteries. Both deliver genuine mountain driving plus arrival at world-class cultural landmarks. The Athens-Delphi-Meteora circuit is a classic 4-day Greek mainland road trip, doable as a loop through Lamia. Best March through November; mountain weather can affect both routes in winter.
Greece is one of Europe's most rewarding motorcycle touring countries. The combination of Mediterranean climate (rideable March through November in mainland, year-round in Crete and the southern Peloponnese), low traffic outside Athens, dramatic mountain roads, and Greek hospitality at village cafes creates one of the strongest riding experiences on the continent.
