Overview

Toyota Kaikan Museum is the visitor hall at Toyota Motor Corporation's head office in Toyota City, Aichi, and it is free to walk into. It is the company's own account of what it makes and how, aimed at the public rather than at buyers, so there is no sales floor and no pressure. Japanese, English and Chinese appear on the displays.

The ground floor is the car floor: the current Toyota range, three Lexus models and a TOYOTA GAZOO Racing area with a GR86 and a GR Yaris, plus a production area built around the welding robots used in Toyota's plants and a mobility area on autonomous driving and electrification. Upstairs opened a new area on 5 June 2026 on how Toyota designs and builds cars, with games and activities, replacing the old children's exhibits. Three free hands on sessions run on weekdays and one on Saturdays, booked on the day at reception.

The building sits across from Toyota's headquarters towers, with its own multi storey car park in front, and it was the departure point for Toyota's plant tours before those were suspended.

What to Expect

  • The current Toyota line up on the ground floor, at the time of writing a Century, Crown Crossover, Land Cruiser FJ, Prius, RAV4, Corolla Cross, bZ4X and bZ4X Touring, a Voxy Welcab and two C+walk mobility scooters. Toyota says the cars on display vary.
  • Three Lexus models in their own area, currently the ES350e, LM500h and RZ600e.
  • The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing corner: the rally and motorsport programmes with a GR86 and a GR Yaris on the floor.
  • The production area, built around the welding robots Toyota uses on its lines, and a mobility area on autonomous driving and electrification.
  • Upstairs, the new area on how Toyota designs and builds cars, with games and activities, opened 5 June 2026.
  • The Lunar Cruiser driving experience: a simulator for up to 2 people in a mock up cabin of the lunar rover Toyota is developing, about 15 minutes.
  • A safety simulator of about 10 minutes and a C+walk ride of about 10 minutes including instruction.
  • A shop on the second floor selling plastic models, miniature cars and books, and a break area with vending machines. There is no cafe.

Things to Note

  • Open 9:30am to 5:00pm, Monday to Saturday. Closed Sundays, New Year, Golden Week and the summer holiday period, and closed at short notice in storms or heavy snow. Changes are posted on the museum's X account, toyota\_kaikan.
  • Entry is free and individual visitors do not need to book. Coach groups must book online in advance.
  • The hands on sessions are free and booked at reception on the day. Lunar Cruiser simulator: Monday to Friday, 9:45am to 11:50am and 1:45pm to 3:30pm. Safety simulator: weekdays 9:45am to 12:00pm and Saturdays 9:45am to 4:15pm, with children under 13 years of age accompanied by an adult. C+walk ride: Monday to Friday 1:45pm to 4:20pm, with a signed form, and a parent or guardian signs for anyone under 18 years of age.
  • Toyota's in person plant tours from the Kaikan (Motomachi, Takaoka and Tsutsumi plants) have been suspended since 12 July 2021 until further notice. Toyota points visitors to its online Virtual Plant Tour instead. Anyone travelling for the plant tour needs to check the official page first.
  • By train, the nearest stations are Mikawa Toyota (JR Aichi Loop Line), Tsuchihashi and Toyota-shi (Meitetsu). From Mikawa Toyota or Tsuchihashi, the Toyota Oiden Bus routes 1 and 2 stop at Toyota Kaikan, about 5 minutes on the bus then about 5 minutes on foot. From Toyota-shi Station, the Meitetsu bus towards Toyota Memorial Hospital stops at Toyota Honsha-Mae, about 25 minutes. Buses are infrequent, so times are worth checking before setting out.
  • Mikawa Toyota Station has no taxi rank. Toyota advises booking a taxi in advance: Hoei Taxi 0565-28-0228 or Meitetsu Taxi 0565-32-1541.
  • Driving: free multi storey car park in front of the museum with about 800 spaces, 13 coach bays and 7 accessible bays. Toyota gives about 20 minutes from the Toyota interchange on the Tomei Expressway and about 10 minutes from Toyota Higashi on the Isewangan Expressway.
  • Photos are allowed inside. Media filming needs advance contact by phone.
  • Lifts to every floor, accessible toilets and three wheelchairs to borrow at reception. Displays are in Japanese, English and Chinese, with no guide staff.
  • Phone 0565-29-3345 (from overseas +81 565 29 3345), 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Saturday.
