The Pointon Collection
Overview
The Pointon Collection at Te Ore Ore, on Masterton's edge in the Wairarapa, is Frank and Gaye Pointon's private museum, shown personally by Frank himself: vintage and antique cars and motorcycles kept in driveable condition, surrounded by rooms of automobilia.
The signature piece is a recreated 1930s New Zealand garage, signs, tools, workshop manuals and mannequins included, and the museum keeps itself fresh with period clothing displays spanning 1870 to 1970 that rotate every few months. A craft and gift shop and gardens round out the property.
This is a genuine call ahead venue: opening runs 10am to 4pm most days but depends on the owners being home, and visitors have occasionally found it closed on posted hours. Phone first, and the owner led tour that follows is the kind of warm, story rich hour big museums cannot buy.
What to Expect
An owner narrated visit rather than a browse; the stories are the exhibit, and every visitor gets the guided tour.
Look out for:
- Vintage and antique cars and motorcycles, kept in driveable condition.
- The recreated 1930s New Zealand garage with period signs, tools and manuals.
- Rotating period clothing displays, 1870 to 1970, changed every few months.
- The craft and gift shop and the gardens around the buildings.
Best way to experience it: call ahead, take the tour with Frank, and allow an unhurried hour; this is the Wairarapa's most personal museum stop.
