Overview

Sportsland SUGO Rental Kart runs on the International West Course, a 984 metre kart track inside the Sportsland SUGO circuit complex in Murata, Miyagi. SUGO says it is one of only two kart tracks in Japan approved by the FIA and its karting commission, the CIK.

The karts are built for rental use: accelerator, brake and steering, nothing else. Sessions are short timed runs that end on a chequered flag, with separate plans for primary school children, for groups who want a qualifying session and a final, and for evening sessions under lights.

SUGO is the big motorsport venue in the Tohoku region. Beyond the kart track it has an international road racing circuit that hosts Super GT and Super Formula, a motocross track, a trials course, rental bikes on a beginner course and a Kids Park. The kart office is in the West Course tower.

What to Expect

  • The track is 984 metres long and 9 to 9.5 metres wide, built to international kart circuit standards.
  • The karts are built for rental use and have three controls: accelerator, brake and steering.
  • Before the first run staff explain the controls and what to watch for on track, and beginners can do practice laps beside the pit.
  • Sessions are short and timed, and the chequered flag comes out before the clock runs down so every driver finishes the lap they are on.
  • Lap timing turns a session into a time attack, and the timed plans give each driver their lap times.
  • The West Course is lit for night running, and evening sessions run under the lights.
  • Groups of five or more can run their own race at night: a qualifying session sets the grid, then a short final.
  • Private hire puts up to seven adult karts and two kids karts on track together, and SUGO's sample plans include a 40 minute endurance race followed by a barbecue with imoni, the local taro and meat stew.

Things to Note

  • Rental kart days are set in a monthly calendar PDF posted on the West Course page; dates not on the calendar are closed. Night karts run Thursday and Friday, 5:30pm to 8pm (last entry 7:30pm), with some weeks off. Night karts are cancelled when a race or private hire has the track.
  • SUGO asks drivers to phone the West Course office on +81 224 83 3116 to confirm track status and hours. Individuals can turn up on the day. Bad weather cancels sessions without notice, and changes are posted on SUGO's Facebook, Instagram, West Course blog and website.
