Overview

Housed in an industrial lakeside building in Arbon, the Saurer Museum preserves Saurer commercial vehicles, engines and locally made textile machinery. The collection includes roughly 20 historic vehicles plus machines that can be demonstrated on request.

Operated by the Oldtimer Club Saurer, the museum also maintains a separate depot for additional vehicles and parts and was recognised with the EMYA Silletto Prize. Volunteers restore and service exhibits in an on-site workshop.

What to Expect

A compact, specialist museum focused on Saurer-built trucks, buses, post and emergency vehicles, plus textile machines from Arbon's industrial past. Exhibits mix restored running vehicles with static displays and workshop activity.

Look out for:

  • The restored 1911 "Caminhao" returned from Brazil.
  • The mechanical-computer Saurer S1 automatic embroidery machine (c.1912).
  • Operational textile machines and weaving/embroidery demonstrations (available on request).
  • About 20 historical vehicles on display and an additional depot nearby with more pieces.

Best way to experience it: Visit on a weekday when volunteers are more likely to be working in the workshop; combine the visit with a walk to the Saurer Garten on the lakeside. The museum is listed by regional tourism and is reachable from Arbon station by local rail.

Things to Note

  • Run by volunteers; demonstrations and access to the workshop are limited and sometimes by request.
  • A separate Saurer depot in Arbon houses additional vehicles and parts.
  • The museum sits on the lakefront near the Saurer Garten outdoor area.
  • Reachable from Arbon station (regional rail); check opening details before you go.
