Overview

Oppama is one of Nissan’s oldest and most automated assembly plants, in operation since 1961. It played a central role in Nissan’s EV history as the production launch site for the Nissan LEAF.

Nissan offers an on‑site plant tour (and virtual options) that highlights automated welding, assembly lines and the facility’s scale. Note the company has announced vehicle production will transfer away from Oppama by the close of the fiscal year ending March 2028.

What to Expect

A guided tour focused on manufacturing processes, automation and the plant’s role in Nissan’s EV history. Tours typically move through observation areas overlooking active production and explanatory exhibits.

Look out for:

  • High‑automation welding and assembly lines visible from designated observation points.
  • Displays and information about the Nissan LEAF and Oppama’s role in EV production.
  • The scale of the site — large factory buildings, research areas and a wharf.
  • Safety briefings and restricted areas; visitors view production from set observation routes.

Best way to experience it:

Book the official plant tour through Nissan’s visit page or use the virtual tour if you prefer remote access. Arrive early, allow roughly 90 minutes as cited by tourism sources, and follow all safety instructions provided by staff.

Things to Note

  • Advance booking is usually required via Nissan’s official visit page.
  • Photography rules vary; expect restrictions inside production areas.
  • The tour includes standing and walking; wear sensible shoes.
  • Vehicle production is scheduled to transfer from Oppama by March 2028—programs may evolve.
