Overview

Mobility Resort Motegi Racing Kart is the rental kart track inside the Honda owned Mobility Resort Motegi in Tochigi, the same complex that hosts the MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix and SUPER GT. The karts come in single and two seater form, with a separate Challenge Kart on its own course for kids.

The track works on a licence ladder. A first visit is an experience session: a lesson, then a run on the track. From there a driver holds a Racing Kart B licence, can book time attack sessions and can work up through the A licence into the Sunday race calendar. The same ladder feeds the Takuma Kids Kart Challenge, Takuma Sato's kart program for children.

The kart track is one attraction inside the park area of the resort, which also holds the Honda Collection Hall, kids car and bike rides, forest adventure courses, zip lines, a hotel and camping.

What to Expect

  • Two rental karts for licence holders: a single seater and a two seater that takes a passenger of 140 cm or taller, with staff instruction before the first run.
  • The Challenge Kart runs on its own 576 metre course as a three lap time attack for kids in Year 4 of primary school and up who do not hold a driving licence. Adults with a licence cannot ride it.
  • The experience session is about 20 minutes all up: a 10 minute lesson, then 5 minutes on the track.
  • Time attack sessions are 8 minutes on track with no lesson, for drivers who have done the experience session and hold the Racing Kart B licence. A lap inside 44 seconds earns the A licence.
  • Race days are Sundays: a seven round Sprint Championship for B licence holders and up, a four round Enjoy Endurance Championship for teams, a members only race series, a three hour endurance race that qualifies teams for the N35 Japan Championship, and SODI World Series points races.
  • The Takuma Kids Kart Challenge runs here as well: Takuma Sato's kart program for children, from first timers through to primary school kids chasing a race debut.

Things to Note

  • The kart track sits inside the park, so park admission comes first: 2,000 yen for adults (junior high age and up) and 1,000 yen for primary school children and children aged 3 and over at the gate, or 1,850 yen and 850 yen as a web ticket. Parking is 1,000 yen per car and 500 yen per motorcycle.
  • Kart prices on regular days: experience session 1,500 yen per person for the single seater and 2,500 yen per kart for the two seater, Challenge Kart 1,200 yen, time attack 2,600 yen. Park Passport holders, MCoM members and Racing Kart members pay 1,200 yen, 2,000 yen, 1,000 yen and 2,000 to 2,100 yen for the same sessions. The Park Passport itself does not cover the karts.
  • Full price applies on race and event days: Super Taikyu, the 2&4 Race, the World Trial, the All Japan Road Race, MotoGP, SUPER GT, Golden Week (3 to 5 May), Obon and the summer and winter fireworks. The MotoGP weekend has its own kart prices, 2,000 yen single and 2,500 yen two seater.
  • Add ons: licence card 300 yen at the License Center in the park ticket office, with your photo if you want it (Racing Kart cards run B, A, S, EX and Member), socks sold at the kart reception for anyone who turns up without them, Racing Kart membership 11,000 yen to join plus 7,000 yen a year (member rates on every session, an 8,000 yen five ride time attack ticket, and free admission and parking for the member plus one companion outside race event dates).
  • Who can drive: the experience session needs a driver 140 cm or taller with an ordinary driving licence, or aged 15 years and over with a Racing Kart B licence or higher. Children 140 cm or taller with a JAF or SL kart licence can also start at the experience session. Challenge Kart is Year 4 of primary school and up, 140 cm or taller, no driving licence. Minors need an adult guardian's handwritten signed consent.
  • Helmets and gloves are lent free at the reception. Own helmets are allowed; half helmets and helmets without a visor are turned away. Anyone in short sleeves, shorts, a skirt, sandals, platform shoes or boots changes into the track's arm covers, trousers and shoes. Glasses or contacts must be worn if the driving licence says so.
  • Advance booking is through Asoview; same day bookings are taken at the Racing Kart reception in the park and close once the day's capacity is full. The driver signs up in person at the reception and groups check in together. Asoview bookings do not get the Park Passport discount.
  • Operating hours vary by day and season and are published only as a calendar on the racing kart page, and the course can be reserved for events or group bookings. Race series rounds run on Sundays with registration closing one week before each round. Storms, snow or other dangerous weather stop sessions at staff discretion.
  • Race entry: Sprint Championship rounds cost 8,300 yen, or 6,000 yen for Racing Kart members. The racing kart office is on 0285-64-0463, 10:00 to 17:00 daily.
  • Getting there: park visitors can use the north or south gate. Weekends and public holidays have one bus from Mito Station north exit at 8:35, returning from the resort at 16:50, with extra shuttles on event days. By train the route is to Motegi Station then taxi. By car the exits are Mito North Smart IC on the Joban Expressway or Makabe IC on the Kita-Kanto Expressway. MotoGP, SUPER GT, the 2&4 Race, Golden Week, the summer fireworks and Obon bring heavy traffic.
  • Food in the park area: Cafeteria Oak with kids meals and Forest Gelateria ROCCO; the Gran Turismo Cafe is in the racing course area.
