Mandarake Nagoya
Overview
Mandarake Nagoya is the Osu branch of Japan's biggest secondhand manga and toy chain, four floors on a side street off the covered Osu arcade, a short walk from Kamimaezu station. Cars are one corner of it, on the fourth floor alongside Transformers, Zoids and dolls, and the way to read the shop is as a secondhand hunt rather than a model car retailer: everything on the shelf came in over the buyback counter, so what you find depends on what a collector sold last week.
The cars corner runs on Tomica. Vintage Tomica and the Tomica Limited Vintage and Vintage Neo lines are the backbone, with 1:18 minicars beside them (the renewed corner showed a 1968 Porsche 911T, a Jaguar C-Type and a JB64 Jimny) and N gauge TOMIX and KATO train sets sharing the wheels and railway shelves. That secondhand model is exactly what gives it real rare find odds: boxed vintage Tomica and discontinued 1:18 pieces surface here, and they sell to whoever gets there first.
Give it the whole building. The second floor toy floor carries the figures and kits, the first floor the comics and cards, and Osu itself is a full afternoon of hobby shops around the arcade. Come after noon, when the doors open, and go straight up.
What to Expect
A four floor secondhand chain store with the cars on 4F; noon to 8pm every day.
- 4F cars corner: vintage Tomica, Tomica Limited Vintage and Vintage Neo, 1:18 minicars, N gauge TOMIX and KATO sets; 1:64 and 1:18 are where it is deepest.
- Everything is secondhand and bought from collectors, so discontinued and boxed pieces turn up at any time and the shelf never looks the same twice: genuine rare find odds on any visit.
- 2F toys, kits and figures; 1F comics, vintage and cards; 3F doujinshi and idol goods.
- Sell as well as buy: the buyback counter takes cars and collections until 7:30pm.
- Kamimaezu station exit 8, through the metal gate into the covered arcade, left after the BSJ Theater, first right; the store puts it at about 5 minutes.
- Osu's other hobby shops sit within a few minutes' walk for a full afternoon.
Things to Note
- Open 12 noon to 8pm, no closing days; buyback reception closes at 7:30pm. Phone 052 261 0700, English enquiries order-nagoya@mandarake.co.jp.
- Secondhand stock only; a specific model cannot be expected and prices track condition and rarity.
- Transit trip: Kamimaezu station (Meijo and Tsurumai lines) or Osu Kannon station; the covered arcade makes it a wet weather option.
