KENBOX Shinjuku Moliere (ケンボックス モリエール店)

KENBOX Shinjuku Moliere is the second shop of Minicar Shop KENBOX, a Tokyo business that buys and sells minicars and specialises in out of print Japanese models. The shop is on the second basement level of the Shinjuku Moliere Building in Shinjuku 3 chome.

Tomica is the backbone of the KENBOX range, from the early boxed editions collectors hunt for through to Tomica Limited Vintage. Current 1:64 releases from the premium brands sit alongside, with a smaller run of 1:43 and larger scales and a long tail of older Japanese makers.

The owner has been collecting minicars for 40 years and appraises every piece that comes in himself. KENBOX holds a Tokyo secondhand dealer licence, and what sits on the shelves in Shinjuku is separate from what KENBOX lists online.

• Tomica runs deepest across the KENBOX range: black box, blue box and Japan made red box editions, Tomica Limited Vintage and TLV Neo, Tomica Premium, and the dealer, supermarket, Tomica Museum and Tokyo Auto Salon specials.
• Premium 1:64 is the second pillar, with MINI GT, Tarmac Works, INNO Models, Era Car and Tiny.
• 1:43 and larger scales come from Ebbro, Spark, Minichamps, Autoart, Kyosho and Ignition Model, with a smaller 1:18 and 1:12 range.
• Older Japanese makers are a category of their own: Diapet, Model Pet, Sakura Pet, Eitai Grip, Taiseiya and Choro-Q, alongside Hot Wheels and Matchbox.
• Buses, trucks, construction machines, police cars and military vehicles each get their own section, Japanese and overseas.
• Old stock is the point here. KENBOX buys collections and deals in out of print models, so the odds of something rare turning up are genuine on any visit, while new MINI GT, Tomica and Hot Wheels releases keep going onto the shelves.

• Hours: 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM Sunday to Thursday, and 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays.
