JDM Rental Japan

JDM Rental Japan is a self drive hire operator based at Kosuge, on the Narita side of Chiba, whose pitch is that you clear customs and get into the car: collection at Narita Airport is free between 10am and 5pm, and delivery to Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka can be arranged. The fleet is sixteen cars listed with gearbox and price, and it runs from the icons, an R35 GT-R widebody, a black and gold 13B RX-7, a B58 Supra RZ and a Midnight Purple R34 Skyline, through the S15 Silvia, S2000 AP2 Type S, GDB and VAB WRX STIs, FK8 and FL5 Civic Type Rs and GR86, down to an RX-8, a 2004 WRX and an ND Roadster at the entry rate.

Prices are per day from ¥14,999 (Silvia, WRX, RX-8, Roadster, GT86) to ¥49,999 for the R35, with no minimum hire, unlimited km on the road, and multi day discounts of 5% from three days, 10% from seven and 15% from eleven. Drivers can be 18 years of age, 25 on some of the faster cars, with passport, home licence and a paper IDP or official translation; the operator says no prior experience is needed, which is generous given that most of the fleet is manual and modified.

The money side needs reading before you book. Insurance is not in the daily rate and is added at booking; whatever tier you take, your maximum liability per incident is fixed at ¥300,000, a minimum ¥100,000 non operation charge applies if the car is off the road, and the cover is void entirely on snow, ice or slippery mountain roads. A hold of at least ¥100,000 sits on your card for 7 to 28 days after return for tolls and fines, billed through the ETC card fitted to every car. For a non driver there is the Daikoku Tour, a Thursday to Saturday evening ride along in a fleet car to Daikoku PA and APIT Autobacs with an English speaking guide, ¥20,000 a head.

• No minimum days; 5% off at 3 to 6 days, 10% at 7 to 10, 15% at 11 plus; unlimited km for road use.
• Self drive from 18 years of age (25 on selected cars) with passport, home licence and IDP or translation; additional drivers must qualify and attend the pickup.
• Insurance added at booking, not included; liability capped at ¥300,000 per incident; NOC from ¥100,000; void on snow and ice.
• Deposit hold of ¥100,000 or more on the card for 7 to 28 days; ETC card fitted, tolls settled after return; 5% card fee on refunds.
• Add ons: free Narita Airport pickup 10am to 5pm; delivery to Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka on request, fee unpublished; Daikoku Tour ride along ¥20,000 adult, ¥10,000 under 13, minimum two.
• Handover: pickup from 10am, return by 6pm, same fuel level or full as agreed, otherwise pump price plus a service fee.

• No track, drift, donut, burnout, rally or time attack use of any kind; no smoking or vaping (fixed penalty plus deodorising); no unlisted drivers or subletting. Keep off unpaved roads and deep water.
• A police report (110) is compulsory after any accident; without one every cost falls on you. Modified cars carry expensive parts, and the operator itself strongly recommends travel insurance that covers rental vehicles: check your policy's rental excess cover before booking the operator's insurance, and remember the ¥300,000 liability cap and NOC are the figures it would need to cover.
• Photograph every panel, wheel, glass and the interior at pickup and return so the images carry a time stamp.
• Cancellation refunds 70% inside 14 days, 50% inside 7 days, nothing inside 3 days. Late returns are billed as an extra day and or late fees.
