Fuji Speedway Sports Driving Rental
Overview
Fuji Speedway runs its own drive menu on the Racing Course at Oyama in Shizuoka, with Mount Fuji behind the main straight. The top of that menu is 86RACER'S: Toyota 86 and GR86 coupes built to the 86/BRZ class spec of the Fuji Champion Race, rented by the session for sports driving slots and maintained by racing driver Hironori Takeuchi's team at SHIFT.
Below it sits a ladder that starts with nothing more than a Japanese driving licence. The 86 experience drive is three laps in a GR86 behind a pace car, CIRCUIT CHALLENGE does the same in a GR Supra, GR Yaris or GR Corolla, and the circuit taxi carries passengers in a GR Supra, R35 GT-R, IONIQ 5 N or Lexus IS500 at over 200 km/h. FORMULA RACER'S, a 200 hp single seater, is for drivers with racing experience.
The kart course, the Fuji Motorsports Museum and the Fuji Speedway Hotel share the site, and the circuit's Super GT, Super Formula and WEC rounds sit between the sports driving days on the calendar.
What to Expect
- 86RACER'S is the headline: GR86 and 86 coupes in the 86/BRZ class spec raced in the Fuji Champion Race, on semi racing tyres with a top speed around 220 km/h and best laps in the two minute range. The rental cars are automatics with paddle shifters, so an AT only licence is enough, and a speed limiter and stability control stay switched on for sports run rentals.
- A professional racer leads the lesson in another 86 and you follow, working on braking points, throttle and lines, then the onboard camera and data logger come out for the debrief. The lessons are pitched to your level by Hironori Takeuchi, who raced the Fuji Freshman Race from 1986, took the 1989 title and went on to JTC, JGTC and Super GT.
- The 86 experience drive is three laps of the Racing Course behind a pace car in a GR86 AT or 86 AT, one or two people in the car, with the car allocated on the day. It is not free running: no overtaking, and no dropping back to open a gap and sprint.
- CIRCUIT CHALLENGE is three laps behind the pace car in a GR car you drive yourself: TOM'S Supra RZ, GR Corolla Morizo Edition or GR Supra SZ with one passenger, or a GR Yaris RZ High Performance or GR Yaris RS with room for three. The cars are staged in front of the Control Center and you wait in your car until your run is called.
- The circuit taxi is two laps as a passenger beside a circuit driver in a GR Supra, R35 GT-R, IONIQ 5 N or Lexus IS500 F Sport Performance, all of which pass 200 km/h on the straight; the 86, GR86 and IS350 F Sport run to 180 km/h. The 86RACER'S taxi is two laps in the race prepared car itself.
- FORMULA RACER'S is a Formula Challenge Japan single seater: FC106 chassis, 2.0 litre four cylinder with 200 hp at 7,200 rpm, six speed sequential gearbox, 490 kg dry. Two cars run per day with a mechanic in the pit, a seat fitting two hours before the first run, advice from the pro before you go out and a debrief after.
- Own car laps come two ways. The experience drive is three laps behind a pace car with two passes of the main straight, passengers allowed in cars and no helmet needed. Licence holders buy sports driving slots of 20 to 50 minutes sorted into lap time bands, with a touring band capped at 180 km/h for beginners, kei cars and minivans.
- Base for everything is the Control Center on the Racing Course, with reception on the first floor. The kart course, the Fuji Motorsports Museum and the Fuji Speedway Hotel are on the same site and have their own AE listings.
Things to Note
- Admission: every product below sits on top of circuit admission on non event days: ¥1,200 for adults 18 years and over, ¥900 for high school students, free for junior high school age and under. FSW Driving License holders and one companion enter free. Admission hours are 7:30 to 16:00.
- Which days: nothing runs daily. The monthly driving calendar on fsw.tv marks experience drive days, circuit taxi days, 86RACER'S slots (red frame) and licence lecture days, and the schedule can change up to two weeks before a date.
- 86RACER'S sports run rental: needs an FSW Driving License. The car is ¥22,500 for 15 minutes or ¥33,700 for 30 minutes with fuel and tyres included, plus a Racing Course sports driving ticket: ¥5,200 for 20 minutes, ¥7,500 for 30, ¥9,700 for 40, ¥11,900 for 50 when bought on the web, ¥500 more at the counter. Both are prepaid by credit card through FSW Smart Pay, one order per session. Bookings go through the Forest Membership portal. A first booking must be an AT car.
- 86RACER'S damage terms: SHIFT, which maintains the cars, publishes a maintenance pack covering repairs up to ¥7,000,000 for a total loss, including single car accidents, contact with another car regardless of fault and driver error such as an over rev. The driver's maximum out of pocket is ¥2,000,000 on a GR86 or ¥1,500,000 on an older 86, excluding tax. Nothing is refunded if the car comes back undamaged.
- Gear for 86RACER'S and own car sports driving: bring your own. A full face or jet helmet (no motocross or off road helmets), long sleeves and long trousers in cotton with a racing suit strongly recommended, racing gloves or an equivalent that covers the wrists, and racing shoes or thin soled sports shoes. No gear hire is offered.
- 86 experience drive: ¥13,300 per car for three laps, one or two people, a valid Japanese driving licence, no FSW licence needed. Nobody who needs a baby, child or junior seat can ride. Apply on the online entry form at least three days ahead; the form is not a booking, the team confirms by email, first come first served, no same day bookings.
- 86RACER'S taxi: ¥11,200 for two laps, or ¥9,000 for FSW Driving License members and anyone who has done an 86 experience or taxi before. Same entry form and lead time as the experience drive.

Cars can be swapped for maintenance.

Runs from 12:00. No advance booking for the public: apply in person at the Control Center first floor reception from opening until 30 minutes before the run, one car per application, first come first served, and you tell staff which car you want. Fuji Speedway Hotel guests can pre book through the front desk. Show your driving licence. The manual cars need a manual licence held for three years or more and a driving check beforehand, so arrive 30 minutes before the run. Passengers from elementary school age; bring your own junior seat.
- FORMULA RACER'S: Racing Course ¥66,000 for 30 minutes, ¥81,500 for 40 or ¥99,000 for 50, plus a track fee of ¥7,000, ¥9,200 or ¥11,400 paid at the Control Center on the day. Bring a racing suit, full face helmet with shield, racing shoes, racing gloves, your FSW licence card and health insurance card. The driver pays repair costs at actual cost; no cap is published.
- Own car experience drive: ¥3,300 per vehicle for three laps, or ¥4,400 with a stop on the main straight for photos (bring your own camera, no photographer; runs in light rain, heavy rain reverts to a standard run). The car must be road legal; bikes must be over 125cc, riders wear a helmet and carry no passenger. A hire car needs the owner's permission. Buses are ¥33,000 per vehicle on weekdays and ¥44,000 on weekends and holidays, arranged in advance.
