Fiat Lingotto Factory

Turin, ItalyOpen today 10am–9pmFrom €4

Overview

The Lingotto is the old Fiat factory on Via Nizza in Turin, and it is famous for one reason: the cars were built on a production line that climbed the building floor by floor, then driven up a spiral ramp and tested on a track laid on the roof. Construction started in 1916, the rooftop track was finished in 1921 and the two spiral ramps in 1925 and 1926. The main building is over 500 metres long and the roof sits 28 metres up.

The plant built Fiats until 1982. Renzo Piano then turned it into the complex it is today, with a shopping centre, hotels, a concert hall, a congress centre and the Pinacoteca Agnelli art gallery in a glass box on the roof. The track survived all of it.

Today the rooftop is called the Pista 500. The 1.1 km loop is a garden of more than 40,000 plants in 28 planted islands with outdoor artworks along the way, and the museum sells a cheap ticket that is just for the roof. Casa FIAT, the free Fiat history display up there, and the FIATCafé500 have their own listings.

What to Expect

  • The full 1.1 km rooftop loop is walkable, with the two banked corners at each end fenced off so you look at them rather than walk them.
  • The South Ramp, the spiral the finished cars drove up, is open to walk on its footpath. It is steep, with a gradient over 8 percent.
  • The roof is a linear garden: 28 planted islands covering about 7,000 of the 27,000 square metres, with more than 40,000 plants from 300 Piedmont species and a hazelnut grove.
  • Outdoor art along the lap, including a monumental billboard commission that changes each year through the Pista 500 Prize. Works come and go, so the line up on the day differs from the website list.
  • Views across Turin from the track edge, with benches along the loop.
  • Audio captions for kids are posted around the track, and there is a tactile model of the Lingotto in Casa FIAT.
  • A rooftop restaurant, La Pista, runs seven days and is reached by the Lingotto lift.
  • Summer evenings bring open air cinema and events on the track.
