Deepdale Off Road 4x4 Driving Centre

Deepdale Off Road runs half‑ and full‑day 4x4 driving experiences and accredited training on a 20‑acre site at Smartgill Farm, three miles from Barnard Castle. Sessions use Land Rover Defenders and on‑site instructors to teach practical off‑road techniques.

The centre also offers occupational 4x4 and UTV courses, trailer training and bespoke corporate events, and is a BORDA‑listed provider positioned between the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and North Pennines.

You’ll spend time behind the wheel on varied muddy, rutted and slope challenges while an instructor coaches line choice, recovery and vehicle control.

On the driving session

• Short safety briefing and vehicle demo.
• Guided runs over hills, mud, water crossings and steep descents in Land Rover Defenders.
• Instructor feedback after each exercise and hands‑on recovery technique demos.
• Opportunity for passengers to swap drivers during half‑day/full‑day formats.

• Arrive in weatherproof clothes and sturdy shoes; sessions get muddy.
• Minimum age and driver's licence requirements may apply for drivers.
• Site is rural; allow time for the short drive from Barnard Castle/A66.
• Book in advance; courses run on set dates and for groups.
