Overview

Automodelli Lambda is a minicar shop in Maejima, Fujieda, a Shizuoka city the shop itself introduces as a football town. It is a garage conversion, under 5 tsubo (about 16.5 square metres) of floor, which the shop describes as the space one car takes up, and it sells finished scale model cars, mainly ones the owner imports from Europe.

The brand list is the European collector catalogue: Altaya, Atlas and Leo Models partwork releases, Brumm, IXO, Skid and Vitesse, Minichamps and Maxichamps, Spark, Schuco, Norev, Eligor, LA-X and CAM@, with Ebbro and Kyosho for the Japanese side and Greenlight for American cars. The shop files its stock by race series as well as by marque: Le Mans, rally, F1, overseas racing and domestic racing on one side, and on the other every marque from Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Fiat and Lancia through Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Renault, Peugeot and Citroën to Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda.

It is a one person weekend shop. The same garage runs an online store with cash on delivery or bank transfer, in store pickup of web orders, and a point card that opens reservations on incoming releases.

What to Expect

  • 1:43 is the shop. Every item in the direct imports group of the online catalogue is 1:43, with a handful of 1:64 from Tarmac Works, Inno Models, Schuco and Greenlight beside them.
  • The spread is European first: Altaya and Atlas partwork racers and rally cars, Brumm Lancias, IXO, Spark and Minichamps, with Ebbro and Kyosho covering Japanese cars. Italian marques get their own shelves in the catalogue, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Fiat and Lancia each listed on their own.
  • The stock is older European collector lines the owner has imported rather than the latest Japanese releases, so the odds favour an unusual European rally car or Le Mans entry at a low price over a brand new release. Partwork pieces in the online catalogue sit around 1,800 to 3,400 yen.
  • It is a single car garage, so this is a 15 minute browse of close packed shelves, not an afternoon. The shop calls itself a quiet hideaway and its blog is as much about customers' own cars (a Porsche 996, an AW11 MR2, a stable of Subaru 360s) as about the models.
