One of F1's most distinctive race weekends. The Mexico City Grand Prix returned to the F1 calendar in 2015 after a 23-year absence and has become one of the championship's most atmospheric events — the 4.3km Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez (named for Pedro and Ricardo Rodríguez, Mexico's pioneering F1 drivers) sits at 2,250m altitude. The Foro Sol stadium section (where the circuit runs through the old baseball stadium) creates a unique amphitheatre atmosphere as cars circle 5 times through grandstand-surrounded corners. Sergio Pérez (Red Bull, 2021-2024) made the event one of the loudest on the calendar with 130,000+ Mexican fans. Late October weekend. La Carrera Panamericana is the spiritual successor to one of motorsport's greatest mythologies. The original event (1950-1954) was a 3,000+km open-road race from Tuxtla Gutiérrez (Chiapas, near Guatemala) to Ciudad Juárez (the US border) — the Mexican equivalent of the Mille Miglia, won by Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche teams. Cancelled in 1955 for safety reasons after the Le Mans disaster, then revived in 1988 as a historic rally for pre-1965 cars. The modern Carrera (run every October) covers 3,000km over 7 days on public roads from Veracruz through the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains, ending in Durango. The combination of vintage cars, mountain passes, town speed stages, and stunning scenery makes it one of the world's great vintage rallies. Spectator-friendly — stages run through historic centres.
Baja California is one of the world's most legendary off-road landscapes. The Baja 1000 (November) is the SCORE International Off-Road Racing series' showcase event — a 1,000+ mile race from Ensenada south through the peninsula's desert and mountains. Trophy Trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, and buggies share the same start, with cars averaging 90-110mph across desert washes, river crossings, and silt beds. The Baja 500 (June) and SCORE San Felipe 250 (March) complete the calendar. Beyond racing, the 1,700km Baja Peninsula road trip (the Transpeninsular Highway, Mexico Federal Highway 1, from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas) is one of the world's classic overland routes — desert, Sea of Cortez coastline, mountain passes (the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir), and remote fishing villages. Best driven October-April; avoid summer (50°C+ heat).
Mexico's automotive heart is in Puebla. The Volkswagen de México plant (founded 1965, the largest VW plant outside Germany) built the original Beetle (the legendary Vocho) until 2003 — the very last Beetle ever made (Beetle Ultima Edición, July 2003) rolled off the Puebla line. The Vocho remains everywhere in Mexican culture: as the country's beloved taxi (still common in smaller cities), as the cheap first car for generations of working families, and as the rolling national symbol. Today's Puebla plant builds the Jetta, Taos, and Tiguan for North American markets. Plus Audi's San José Chiapa plant (Q5 production), the Stellantis/FCA plant in Saltillo (Ram trucks, Jeep Compass), and Toyota's Apaseo el Grande plant. Mexico now produces 4 million+ vehicles annually — one of the world's top 10 producers.
Mexico has produced an outsized share of F1 talent. Pedro Rodríguez (the elder brother, 1940-1971) won two F1 Grands Prix (South Africa 1967, Belgium 1970) and 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968 — the first Mexican to win an F1 race. Ricardo Rodríguez (the younger brother, 1942-1962) qualified on pole at the 1962 Italian GP at 19 years old before dying in practice for the Mexican GP at the same circuit later named for them both. Sergio "Checo" Pérez (born 1990) won 6 F1 races during his Red Bull Racing tenure 2021-2024, becoming Mexico's most successful F1 driver. Plus Patrick Gallardo, Daniel Suárez (NASCAR), and the emerging Mexican F2/F3 pipeline. The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez itself is the country's pilgrimage site — the names of the brothers above the start-finish straight.
Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre) in Chihuahua delivers one of North America's most spectacular drives. The Sierra Madre Occidental's canyon system is collectively larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon — the Urique Canyon plunges 1,879m from the rim. The MEX-127 from Chihuahua to Creel, then the dirt road descent to Batopilas via the famous La Bufa cliff route (the road clings to the canyon wall with 1,000m+ vertical drops), is one of the world's great mountain drives. Plus the parallel Chihuahua-Pacific Railway (El Chepe, the most spectacular train in the Americas) for non-drivers. The road is paved to Creel; rough beyond. 4WD required for the Batopilas descent. Best driven October-May (dry season); avoid summer monsoon. Plan 4-5 days for the full Copper Canyon route.
